Darrell Lance Abbott (1966–2004), known as Dimebag Darrell, was an American guitarist who co-founded the heavy metal bands Pantera and Damageplan alongside his brother, drummer Vinnie Paul. Rising from the Texas club circuit, he helped pioneer groove metal with a playing style defined by explosive solos, bluesy bends, and crushing palm-muted riffs that transformed the genre in the 1990s. Pantera became one of the most commercially successful and influential metal bands in history, selling over 20 million records worldwide. Dimebag was tragically shot and killed onstage during a Damageplan concert in Columbus, Ohio on December 8, 2004, but his legacy as one of the greatest metal guitarists of all time endures.
