Metal Hall of Fame inductee Raven's current drummer Mike Heller was called upon for a last-minute substitution, filling in for Anthrax's longtime drummer Charlie Benante at the band's September 29 concert in San Antonio. The show was part of Anthrax's high-profile support slot on a major tour featuring Iron Maiden and Megadeth.

According to reports, the reason for Benante's absence from the Anthrax San Antonio date was not disclosed. Heller, who has previously drummed for Fear Factory, stepped up to handle the demanding set on short notice, demonstrating the professionalism and versatility that has defined his career across multiple legendary metal acts.

The substitution highlighted the tight-knit nature of the metal community, where musicians from different bands support one another when circumstances require. For Heller to step away from his duties with Raven to assist one of thrash metal's pioneering acts on such a significant tour date underscores both his abilities and the mutual respect among metal's elite players.

About Raven

Raven, the British heavy metal trio inducted into the Metal Hall of Fame, has been a driving force in heavy metal since forming in 1974 in Newcastle, England. Founded by brothers John Gallagher (bass/vocals) and Mark Gallagher (guitar), the band became instrumental in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement and is widely credited with helping to lay the groundwork for thrash metal.

Known for their athletic, high-energy live performances and their influence on the development of speed and thrash metal, Raven gained particular recognition in the early 1980s with albums that would inspire a generation of heavier, faster bands. Their impact on the American metal scene was profound, as they were among the first NWOBHM bands to tour extensively in the United States, directly influencing the burgeoning thrash metal movement.

Mike Heller joined Raven as their drummer, bringing his powerful, precise playing style to a band that has never compromised its commitment to raw, energetic heavy metal. His versatility as a player was on full display with his emergency appearance behind the kit for Anthrax, proving once again why he's earned his place among metal's respected musicians.
