British heavy metal legends Saxon have announced their 25th studio album, Gods Of Thunder, set for release on January 22, 2027. The announcement marks another milestone in the career of one of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal's most enduring acts.
Gods Of Thunder continues Saxon's prolific output as the band approaches five decades of delivering uncompromising heavy metal to fans worldwide. Details about the album's content and recording remain forthcoming, but the announcement alone reaffirms the band's commitment to creating new music well into their legendary career.
NWOBHM Pioneers
Formed in 1977 in Barnsley, England, Saxon emerged as one of the defining bands of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement. Alongside Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, and Motörhead, Saxon helped reshape heavy metal in the late 1970s and early 1980s, bridging the gap between the genre's foundational acts and a new generation of metalheads.
The band's classic lineup, fronted by vocalist Biff Byford, delivered a string of influential albums including Wheels of Steel (1980), Strong Arm of the Law (1980), and Denim and Leather (1981). These releases established Saxon's signature sound: powerful riffs, galloping rhythms, and anthemic choruses that celebrated working-class pride and the heavy metal lifestyle itself.
Saxon's induction into the Metal Hall of Fame recognizes not only their commercial success and musical influence but their unwavering dedication to heavy metal across multiple generations. While many of their NWOBHM contemporaries either disbanded or dramatically altered their sound, Saxon has remained remarkably consistent, continuing to tour extensively and release new material regularly.
With 25 studio albums spanning nearly 50 years, Saxon stands as a testament to the enduring power of traditional heavy metal. Gods Of Thunder promises to add another chapter to a legacy that has inspired countless bands and solidified Saxon's place among metal's true elite.
